Since its foundation as a manufacturer of records andphonographs in 1927, Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) has beena long-time leader of hardware and software development in theaudiovisual field.
In its 70-year history, JVC's electronics technology hascontinually reshaped the field on a worldwide scale, includingbreakthroughs such as 45/45 groove stereo systems for stereorecords, 4-channel stereo systems (CD-4), 2-head VTRs, the VHSformat for home uses. JVC's corporate growth has been supportedby the sustained technology-oriented philosophy.
In 1976, JVC marketed VHS video recorders. Since then, JVC hasmaintained the VHS standard and compatibility with emphasis onthe "standard unification" for consumers' benefitswhenever the video products are renewed and improved. As aresult, the VHS equipment has gained reliability as long-lifetool better for records and communication, which has successfullypenetrated no less than 600 million units globally. The VHSstandard has been used further for the development of W-VHS tocomply with next-generation wide-screen TVs as well as D-VHS withdigital technology installed.
As CD usheredin the digital technology for the audio field, the visual fieldis heading for digitalization. In this sphere, JVC has activelymade highly technological developments. At present, JVC isplaying a key role in unifying the Moving Picture Image CodingExperts Group (MPEG) standardization, working in jointcooperation with the world's leading audiovisual, telecommunications and information equipment manufacturers andresearch institutes. One remarkable example of this effort isVideo CD. Based on this motion picture compression technology,JVC has taken the leadership of developing digital video discsand digital video cassettes. Digital video disc was firstcommercialized for professional-use karaoke systems and, atpresent, it is in the process of the DVD- standard-basedcommercialization. Meanwhile, digital video cassette emerged in the fall of 1995 as the world's most light-weighted and small-sized DVCcamcorder, which has been highly appreciated as a DVCmasterpiece.
