JVC Announces New D-VHS “D-Theater”
Software Platform for HD Prerecorded Content
Option to D-VHS Standard for North American Market to Include Exclusive
Encryption Technology to Protect High Value Prerecorded Content

Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC), the inventor of the VHS video format and one of the world's leading innovators in audio-visual consumer electronics, today announced the completion of the D-VHS D-Theater high definition video prerecorded software platform. The platform incorporates a new proprietary encryption system to prevent the unauthorized duplication of high value content. The system has been added as an option to the D-VHS standard for products in the North American market.

"D-Theater" Technology Features

The content protection technology incorporated in the D-Theater software platform further reinforces the existing D-VHS security system providing significantly stronger levels of protection against illegal copying of feature films and other high value content.

  1. D-Theater technology will be applicable to prerecorded HD content.

  2. D-Theater high definition software will be recorded in the D-VHS HS (High Speed data rate) mode. (The HS mode is the optional mode in the D-VHS format that will allow HD content recording.)

  3. An advanced proprietary encryption system is employed to achieve content protection --- tapes with genuine data can only be created on duplication equipment licensed and approved by JVC.

  4. D-Theater video software, identified by a prominent D-Theater logo on the packaging, will be playable on D-VHS video recorders bearing the same D-Theater logo.

  5. D-Theater compatible D-VHS video recorders will be fully compatible with conventional recordings made from D-VHS video recorders in the HS and STD modes, as well as other similarly equipped modes.

JVC believes this new D-Theater prerecorded HD software platform will pave the way for major studios and other copyright holders to release prerecorded content based on this secure platform allowing consumers the full benefits of the digital and high definition era. Additionally, since D-VHS allows the recording and playback of virtually any broadcast source, JVC believes that the rapid penetration of D-VHS will dramatically quicken the transition from analog to HD digital in North America.
