June 20th Both challenging the tournament favourites, Japan and Korea Republic bent their knees to almost say goodbye to France. One resisting and giving away at only by Davor Suker's splashing skill, the other despe-rately seeking an honourable death rather than an ignoble surrender. However, the match of the day wes definitely Belgium vs Mexico, as both sides exchanged the great scoring shows and especially the bright and notable winning-spirit from restless Mexicans. Belgium kept their pace with veteran Enzo Scifo's sophisticated ball control in the first half, then was rewarded 2 goals from Marc Wilmots to dominate totally till the first 10 minutes into the second half. But seemingly awaiting for Belgians' optimism, Mexico returned fantas-tically
with raging waves of attack and succeeded to equlize within only 10 minutes.
Belgium must regret the foul challenge by Gert Verheyen inside their own
penalty area, because they got suffered by Verheyen's sent-off as well as
giving away the penalty kick which was neatly converted by the opponent's
skipper Garcia Aspe. Mexico's equalizer came at 62nd minute when Jesus Ramirez
sent a brilliant cross to Cuauhtemoc Blanco who dived superbly to score
by left foot. |
