The 20th JVC Tokyo Video Festival was one of the world's most important international video competitions, which attracted a record 2,096 entries - exceeding 2,000 for the first time ever - including 941 from 40 foreign countries and regions.
Trend of Works
Entries from people in their 20s totaled 631, accounting for 32.1% of all entries. Entries and nominated works produced by women also increased, thanks to the expanding use of light and handy digital camcorders. There was a dramatic increase in works depicting people*s daily lives.

Approximately 35% of the entries from Japan were produced with digital camcorders marketed from late 1995. Particularly noticable was the way people used these camcorders* advanced digital features and nonlinear editing functions to produce exceptionly beautiful pictures and highly versatile effects.

The judges for the 20th Tokyo Video Festival are Hiroshi Minami (executive judge), professor emeritus, Hitotsubashi University; Susumu Hani, film director; Hakudo Kobayashi, video artist; Fujiko Nakaya, video artist; Nobuhiko Obayashi, film director; Makoto Shiina, novelist; Naoto Takenaka, actor and film director; and Takuro Bojo, JVC's senior corporate advisor.
