Recycling for Specified Home Applicances

Everyone to recycle home appliances, and to create a circular society

Targeting the creation of a circular economy and society through the effective use of resources and the reduction of waste products, Japan's Home Appliance Recycling Law (formal title: Law for Recycling of Specified Kinds of Home Appliances) is enacted to create a new system for promoting the recycling of used home appliances.

Starting from April 1, 2001, the Law designates four items, including air-conditioners, televisions, refrigerators/freezers, and washing machines, as those to be subject to recycling. Stakeholders, such as consumers, retail stores, local communities and appliance manufacturers, are all mandated to share roles and responsibilities in promoting the recycling of home appliances.
