Concerts kicked off at Carnegie Hall on June 16th with the innovative music of Ornette Coleman. Coleman, full of energy, created exquisite soundscapes along with his quartet consisting of a drummer and three bassists.
Rising stars Chris Botti and Lizz Wright also made their Carnegie Hall debuts on the 17th. In a special 70th year tribute concert, the venerable jazz club the Village Vanguard was honored by artists including the Bad Plus, Paul Motian and Dr. Michael White. The blues was in no short supply on the 20th as Susan Tedeschi opened for the legendary Etta James, who got the crowd on its feet with her feisty, soulful performance.
Bill Cosby helped Dave Brubeck celebrate his 85th birthday at Carnegie Hall. The pianist's quartet and big band joined in the fun and, after all of these years, fans proved that they never get tired of hearing his trademark tune, "Take Five."
Returning to Carnegie Hall for the first time in 31 years, Smokey Robinson treated fans to his seemingly unending catalogue of hits. Backed by a full band including horns, strings, backup singers, and dancers, Robinson joined in with the crowd as they danced and sang along with his timeless chart-toppers and tunes from his brand new jazz album.
