Held for 3 days, from July 14th to 16th, the 31st JVC North Sea Jazz Festival was another success, this time moving cities from The Hague to Rotterdam.
The venue this time, Ahoy, is famous as a huge multifunctional space used particularly for music concerts. For the 3 days of the festival 14 stages (named after different rivers) hosted more than 180 sets.
This year, as Artist in Residence (a selected artist plays in different programs as the festival's featured artist during the festival), Branford Marsalis played classical music at the AMAZON stage opening with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra on 14th. The next day with his quartet, Marsalis dedicated a live rendition of "A Love Supreme " to the jazz giant John Coltrane, and on the last day he performed on the HUDSON stage as a trio with guest musician Roy Haynes, father of modern jazz drumming.
The main stage among the 14 stages was the JVC NILE. It housed 10,000 people and the North Sea Jazz Festival's motto "Provide jazz in broad sense" was displayed. The Nile venue was made up of 2 stages on the right and left and live sets took place on both stages in turn with a 15-minute break between shows until dawn.
