Report for 2006

Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker

The ever-evolving Herbie Hancock thrilled audiences at Carnegie Hall as he performed as a duo, trio, and quartet with legendary artists Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. Hancock was also joined by Marcus Miller, Lionel Loueke, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Matt Garrison. Further, the audience went even more wild when saxophonist Michael Brecker walked onto the stage for the first time after being out of the limelight due to a lengthy illness.

This year's series at Carnegie Hall was closed out with an all-star tribute to Mambo master bassist Israel "Cachao" Lopez.

Fans were also treated to a series of intimate, virtuosic performances at Carnegie's smaller, yet equally pristine, Zankel Hall. Pianist Brad Mehldau and guitarist Ralph Towner presented stellar solo performances and Charles Lloyd's Sangam shared its new music.

This year's festival also paid tribute to Brazilian music with a four-night series of concerts at the Jazz Standard. Performers included the Choro Ensemble, Romero Lumbabo and Luciana Souza. Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson featured his quartet in a special Father's Day concert at Schomburg Center.

Pianist Andrew Hill lit up the stage at the Studio Museum in Harlem and Bill Frisell presented his guitar magic at Symphony Space. Pianist Robert Glasper and dancer Savion Glover gave an invigorating free concert after the rain as a part the JVC Jazz Festival's continued partnership with the Celebrate Brooklyn festival.

The 2006 JVC Jazz Festival New York was truly one of the best yet! See you next year!
