The last day, Sunday the 16th, started on the NILE stage at 4:30pm with RH Factor's gorgeous set that included trumpeter Roy Hargrove, alto saxophonist Bruce Williams, and baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall, as well as female vocalist/trumpeter Renee Neufville. Marcus Miller enraptured the audience with his powerful, precise technique and deep grooves.
Called back for an encore by an enthusiastic crowd, he offered a flowing melody on bass clarinet. After a bit of delay, Erykah Badu exhibited her unique, highly spiritual vocal style. She was followed by Paul Weller who appeared on stage holding guitar. Weller filled the venue with beautiful sounds from guitar and piano.
The final live set of the festival was by a rapper Kanye West. West arrived on the stage where female strings with face makeup, backup vocalists, and a DJ were waiting. They assimilated energetic rap and acoustic instruments so beautifully that it felt as if the performers and audience were unified in their excitement.
In addition, the king of flamenco guitar Paco De Lucia performed in a sextet and the Wayne Shorter Quartet played on the AMAZON stage. On the HUDSON, the current chart-topping young trumpeter Chris Botti appeared and the CONGO stage saw a set by the Mambo master Cachao.
The first JVC Jazz Festival in Rotterdam closed with a thrilling buzz for the audience.
