Report for 2006

Jamiroquai

On the first day, the NILE stage was opened by Jamiroquai, the superstar of acid jazz. Jay Kay, replete with customary unique hat, provided a light but hot performance which enlivened the venue. Then the Clarke/Duke Project, reunited after 16 years, and great guitarist Jeff Beck appeared to charm the audience of various ages. The timeless performance made everyone forget the years that have passed.

The venue was still buzzing when thing got even wilder with Buddy Guy. Guy mesmerized people with his blues guitar and voice from deep in his soul. In addition, Al Jarreau put on a superb performance and featured Chris Walker, director and bassist of the band, as vocalist.

Jeff Beck
Herbie Hancock

There were also many other stages which featured excellent performances on the first day. Fourplay appeared for the first time in the North Sea Jazz Festival and showcased their smooth, clear sound on the MAAS stage. On the AMAZON stage the Joe Sample Trio, including guest Randy Crawford, played their new songs. Crawford's hit songs re-arranged by Sample were remarkable. Herbie Hancock played brilliantly with young, up-and-coming musicians like Lionel Loueke from Benin, who lent an African flavor to the music. On the DARLING stage, Larry Grenadier and Brad Mehidau Trio, also featuring Jeff Ballard, performed. The first day of the festival was closed on the YUKON stage with Soil & Pimp Sessions from Japan who shook the venue until after 2:30am with their explosive sound.
